Achievements in South Africa

Cape Town:

  • Cape Town volunteers raised R910 with their spa fundraiser for the GAPA Enrichment Program.
  • Cape Town volunteer donated five recycled skipping ropes to the GAPA Enrichment program.
  • Shack installed in the Cape Town house to responsibly store and implement resource donations from our generous supporters!
  • Zumba class in Cape Town raised R800 towards the GAPA Enrichment Project.
  • Sporting Chance Street Cricket a huge success
  • 70% of Grade R can recognise numbers 1-10 at Red Hill Preschool.
  • 100% of Grade R can successfully identify 10 letters at Red Hill Preschool.
  • 152 children and 12 grannies from GAPA went on an educational outing to Kirstenbosch Gardens in Cape Town.
  • New alphabet patterns and resources painted on the walls at Red Hill Preschool
  • Nutrition workshop held for teachers at Red Hill.
  • New stove purchased for Red Hill Preschool.
  • Red Hill Preschool children made get well cards for the sick at the local hospital.
  • Rubber softplay installed at Luntu Educare
  • 159 children, 14 grannies and 3 grandpas went up Table Mountain learning about flora and fauna, our environment and the sights around Cape Town
  • Volunteers and staff participated in a night of fondue fun, raising R710 for our Educational Support project with Luntu Educare

  • Veggie and herb gardens added to our health and nutrition programme in Cape Town.

Kwa-Zulu Natal

  • Finished building Gogo 4 kids’ toilet and fixed their chicken coup, which had been destroyed by a storm.
  • New clothing donated to our 3 brothers in our Empower a Family Project, St Lucia.
  • Three JoJo tanks were installed at St. Lucia to collect rainwater and provide a sustainable water source to three local residents.
  • St Lucia’s Siyanqoba creche’s floor has been laid.
  • Matresses and beds donated to families in St Lucia
  • 39 visits were completed providing Home Based Care patients with support and advice.
  • Water runs have now been included on Home Assistance during our current water crisis to help disabled/elderly to access fresh water.
  • Siyanqoba creche build, St Lucia, is built
  • Built two new beds for siblings from our Empower a Family programme
  • Painted numbers and alphabet onto the walls of Dukuduku creche.
  • Fixed play equipment at Sinenhlanhla creche.
  • Helped plant gardens for our 3 families from our Empower a Family programme and two HIV support groups.
  • Monthly Quiz Night raised R538 for our Family Empowerment program.

Achievements in Zambia:

  • THAF’s #HelpingHand Highlight shed light on how our Sponsor a Child project in Livingstone, Zambia helped Nambo have a safe place to stay, with three meals a day, while going to school!
  • The Tag Rugby Trust joined our Livingstone team, painting classrooms and adding layers to the security wall at Zambezi Sawmills School.
  • 100 new chickens bought for Linda Farm
  • The building structure of the new three ward District Hospital, Linda Clinic, in Livingstone is complete.
  • Over $10 000 raised by a volunteer for the security wall at Zambezi Sawmills.
  • Food gardens created and thriving at Zambezi Sawmills.
  • Two more children have been sponsored through our sponsorship programme
  • Classroom block up to roof level at Zambezi Sawmills has been built
  • Borehole at Zambezi Sawmills has been drilled.
  • All equipment and funds to build a chicken run have been provided and 100 chickens, feed, charcoal and feeding tray, by Highlands School.
  • May Day Madness fundraiser was held in Livingstone raising over $500 for the Linda expansion project.
  • Linda Clinic construction underway starting with the roof structure.
  • Four teachers and two staff members trained on Happy Readers.

Achievements in Zanzibar:

  • The pillars are up at our Jambiani Educational Community Centre.
  • Quiz night at Moshi, Kilimanjaro raised 285,800 Tanzanian Shillings.
  • GBP317 raised through fundraising activities in Zanzibar for Marine Conservation.
  • 67 trees planted at Jambiani Educational Centre.
  • Floors are almost complete at Jambiani Education Centre.
  • The Kanga Ladies had another harvest of spinach and aubergines and managed to make a good profit from them.
  • The Conservation Club, Zanzibar, had their first field trip to the Kizimbani Agricultural Training Institute.
  • Cholera and malaria education given to our Kanga ladies and teachers at two of the nurserys we support in Zanzibar.
  • Three more truck loads of coral rock arrived for the Jambiani Educational Community Projects.
  • Over $150 was raised at a quiz night for the Marine Conservation Club in Zanzibar.
  • $500 was donated by a volunteer for the Jambiani Educational Community Project.
  • Women’s group in Zanzibar have begun taking care of the Beyond the Roots Garden.

Achievements in Kenya:

  • New washing machine installed at Karuri Health Centre, Kenya
  • Kikuyu Paediatric Ward floor, windows, floor tiles and wall construction has begun.

Achievements in Moshi:

  • Colour Run in Moshi raised money for the wall at Langoni Old People’s Home.

Achievements in South Africa

Cape Town:

  • Raising awareness and fundraising in Cape Town on Heritage Day in South Africa
  • Large donation of sports equipment and educational toys were given to the Cape Town projects.
  • The grandmothers and 149 children from GAPA took a trip to the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town.
  • Continuing our hydration-themed workshops, an information session with teachers from Red Hill Preschool was held about hydration and the importance of water for children.
  • Toothbrushes were delivered to preschool children in Cape Town, where they received a lesson about oral hygiene.
  • A nutrition and feeding workshop, to learn about the importance of hydration, was given to teachers at Children of Hope Preschool,Cape Town.
  • Clothing, shoes, toys and household items provided to families affected by the fire in Masipumelele, CPT, SA.
  • A new worm farm was constructed at Children of Hope, Cape Town by African Impact volunteer.
  • New jerseys received by a local football team in Cape Town, just in time for their provincial game.
  • 151 visited the stadium

Kwa-Zulu Natal:

  • Progress continued at the Mange Creche toilets in rural KwaZulu-Natal as foundations have been laid and toilet pits dug.
  • Shade cloth erected around the fence at the Mange Garden in KZN to keep the vegetables safe from the chickens.
  • Creche students made friendship bracelets during an art class thanks to generous donations to the educational enrichment programme.
  • Improvements were completed to the inside classroom at Mange Creche in rural KZN including a new coat of paint with murals and design.
  • A number of tables and chairs were delivered to Mange Creche in rural KwaZulu Natal.
  • Walls of the toilets at Inkanyezi Creche are looking great, and the roof has been put up.
  • Ceremony held at Inkanyezi Creche to celebrate the opening of their three new toilets.
  • Additional painting was completed in the interior of Inkanyezi Creche, KZN.
  • New floor, roof and doors at Etshaneni Clinici, KwaZulu Natal.
  • Community members came out to erect posts to secure the perimeter of the Etshaneni Clinic site before renovations begin.
  • Construction of the fence for the Etshaneni Clinic fence began.
  • Fencing for the Etshaneni Clinic was delivered.
  • 3.3 hectares of the Etshaneni Garden were ploughed in preperation.
  • 100 chicks delivered to the Etshaneni Chicken Project, KZN, as part of an income generation initiative for local women.
  • Floor refurbishments to the future clinic in the Etshaneni Community of KwaZulu Natal continue.
  • African Impact volunteers helped build brand new swings at Zaminfundo Creche in KZN.
  • Four wheelchairs were donated to home based care patients and to the clinic in Khula Village, KZN.
  • St Lucia’s after-school club trip was organised:, the children learnt about cooking, enjoyed a restaurant tour, tried dishes and ended with a trip to the beach!
  • St Lucia’s Khula Clinic received a new blood pressure machine.
  • Helped sponsor an HIV Education workshop for 20 teenagers from Khula Village in KZN.
  • 1000 nappies were donated to our educational support program in KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Rainbows and African animal adorn the walls at Simunye Creche in KZN.
  • Volunteers and THAF intern planted spinach at the Mama Grace Garden in KZN.
  • Donations including clothing, handed out to our healthcare project patients in KZN.
  • The Reading Club in KZN was featured in the local newspaper.
  • Roof of a patient suffering with cancer was patched and now no longer leaks thanks to a St Lucia volunteer.
  • Homes rebuilt after the St Lucia storms hit in December.
  • A sign was built and later erected at one of our garden projects in rural KwaZulu Natal, and a gate around the garden was completed to secure the area for planting.
  • Donations of shoes and clothes that were given by generous volunteers at our partners at African Impact – St Lucia were given out to various children in both the education and healthcare programs.
  • School uniforms given to three of our patients at the St Lucia projects, who will be enrolled in school for the first time.

Achievements in Kenya:

  • A greenhouse has been erected and agricultural training for staff has begun at the BOC Children’s Centre in Kenya.
  • Thanks to a generous donation from Shauna, a special needs teacher with our partners at African Impact in Kenya, a sensory materials workshop was completed with the teachers at Mukeu Special Needs School.
  • Contractors are nearly finished the water tank at Soon Big Brain Academy in Kenya! On this day they were busy smoothing the columns that will support the water tank.

Achievements in Zambia:

  • The adult literacy programme celebrated 35 graduates in 2014
  • 25 students have fully completed their studies on the sponsor a child programme
  • Talent show held in Livingstone for community schools, where thank-you parcels of school supplies were given to participants and THAF trophies handed out.
  • Window and door frames, foundation walls and interiors completed at Linda Clinic, Livingstone
  • The construction of the classroom block at Zambezi Sawmills School and a rugby tournament for local schools in Livingstone was thanks to our partnership with Tag Rugby.
  • Ground-breaking ceremony held to celebrate the new wall around Zambezi Sawmills School.
  • Contractors raised the walls of the perimeter fence and a 1×1 classroom block at Zambezi Sawmills.
  • THAF participated in the Put Foot rally, where 330 learners from Linda Community School received brand new shoes.
  • Volunteers from our partners at African Impact – Livingstone continue painting the finishing touches at Maramba Old People’s Home.
  • Delivered a donation of 50 toothbrushes and toothpastes to a dental clinic in Livingstone.
  • A parcel filled with medical supplies donated to the Livingstone General Hospital.
  • 20 jerseys and 10 pairs of shorts given to the Zambezi Sports Club football team.
  • 40 exercise books given to the new Reading Club in Livingstone along with chalk to the Math Club.
  • Training bibs and footballs donated to The Local Dulla Boy’s Football team, Zanziba.

Achievements in Tanzania:

  • The finishing touches were made to the gate at the Jambiani Educational Community Centre.
  • African Impact turned 10 so together to celebrate we created of a number of gardens at our focal project locations.
  • Land has been prepared at the Jambiani Educational Community Centre to create a garden.
  • Sandcastle fundraiser helped raise money for the Jambiani Educational Community Centre.
  • Donation drop of school and sports supplies taken to four schools in Zanzibar.
  • Zanzibar volunteers moved all heavy coral rock and have started clearing the land of trees and shrubs for the JECC.
  • Funds raised at a games night for the JECC.
  • Shelter built at the site of an after school club for vulnerable children – learners can do crafts and activities in a shaded, protected area!
  • Donations given to local families in need of some extra support in Jambiani, Zanzibar.
  • Progress made on site with volunteers moving coral rocks and helping to complete the wall with concrete pillars.
  • The access road to the Jambiani Educational Community Centre Site was completed

Achievents in Moshi

  • The adult literacy programme saw an impressive 44% pass rate in 2014 with 4 students completing all the classes and moving on to further studies

2013 Achievements:

Achievements in South Africa:

Western Cape:

  • New sinks installed at our Red Hill Pre-School giving our teachers and children easy access to running water
  • Food garden created
  • Income for our crafters generated through THAF merchandise (CT and STL) = R 2280
  • CT BMI stats: 74% improvement in the children’s BMI
  • STL BMI stats: 10 patients achieved weight gain and BMI over 18.5
  • 4 patients graduated from the programme and are now living a healthy positive life.
  • There was a 43.3kg weight increase across 6 families
  • Number of meals (CT): 27,300 warm and nutritious meals
  • 349 Number of people in SA reached (HBC and Feeding)

KwaZulu Natal:

  • Educational supplies given to 8 creches around St. Lucia.
  • Camera trap launched in Thanda to help combat Rhino poaching
  • Two parcels for newborn babies were made up with lots of clothes, nappies and some more baby essentials ready to be donated to two new moms that our partners work with in KwaZulu Natal.
  • A massive donation of 50 baseball caps were given from a partner volunteer from Venezuela to Inkanyezi and Malibongwe Creche in KwaZulu Natal.
  • A one hour session of yoga at the volunteer house raised over R160 for Inkanyezi Crèche.
  • A THAF games and social night raising over R600 for Inkanyezi Crèche.
  • 29 brick were made for the Inkanyezi Creche Development Programme.
  • 18 football kits donated to a local team on Women’s Day thanks to our partners in STL.
  • A large donation of clothes, toys, blankets and towels went to a local Gogo and 4 children who are now on the 10 Families Programme.
  • A sign was created and fixed at one of our sponsored gardens in Ezwenelisha, KwaZulu Natal. The vegetables will be given to needy patients in the area.
  • A whopping R2098 was raised from the St Lucia quiz night will go towards the medical projects in the local communities.
  • Clothes were donated to a family who had all of their clothes stolen in rural KwaZulu Natal.
  • Successful community meeting held in Etshaneni, confirming the imminent delivery of the fence for the vegetable garden project.
  • Research volunteer, Melvin, washed the Prado car at the lodge, raising R300 in sponsorship for the TEN Campaign.
  • Cuddly toy donations were given out at a rural clinic in KwaZulu Natal to mothers and children awaiting consultations.
  • Scavenger Hunt fundraiser between Thanda and St Lucia projects raising over R1100 for medical and community projects in both communities.
  • Yoga session held in St Lucia raises R160 for the medical outreach project.
  • Two families graduated from the St Lucia Nutrition Programme and were donated clothing and an indigenous tree for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
  • A donation was given for a local Youth Day celebration in KZN which included a mobile HIV testing clinic.
  • Volunteers began making shelves for 8 crèches in Khula Village to make the preschools safer for the students.
  • 62 bags of rubbish collected on Earth Day by the St Lucia community and our volunteers.
  • 14 food gardens created

Achievements in Kenya:

  • New roof for Karuri Health Centre completed.
  • Money raised to start building at Kikuri Labour ward in Kenya
  • Murals on the walls, painted by our volunteers, in the new patients waiting bay have begun at Karuri Health Centre, Kenya.
  • Karuri Stage 3 boasts a new floor, refurbished walls and plenty of seating for mothers and babies awaiting treatment.
  • Contractors began work on the furnishing for Karuri Health Centre, which will include benches for the centre’s waiting room.
  • Tiles for the renovation of Karuri Health Centre were delivered and approved, marking the start of building


Achievements in Zambia:

  • New equipment for Linda Community School in Livingstone for street children
  • Mwandi teachers house finished in Zambia, giving security to the teachers and school
  •  All our grade 9 sponsor a child participants passed to grade 10!
  • 30 T-shirts were given to Nakatindi Community care givers and other carers in Livingstone, Zambia.
  • ECG machine, BMI calculators, catheters, syringes, needles and antibiotics were donated to the Livingstone General Hospital
  • 9 Loads of gravel donated towards the Linda expansion build
  • Crutches donated to Zambia
  • 50 bikes donated to various local schoos in Zambia

Achievements in South Africa:

KwaZulu-Natal:

  • Education toys and materials for 7 crèches reached over 200 children, enhancing their preschool experience.
  • 385 patients given medical assistance through Home Based Care in areas that are otherwise not covered by health workers.
  • HIV education certificates awarded to 220 adults and 171, children, to equip people with the tools to understand how to prevent HIV and to live a positive, healthy life style.
  • 13 families reached through the 10 family’s nutrition program providing nutritious food supplements to help recovery from ill health and better nutrition.
  • 80 children reading books through a sponsored library to assist with their education.
  • Inkanyezi crèche new classroom has created a stimulating educational environment for the children who attend.
  • A scale donated to the Khula Clinic to weigh all patients wanting medical assistance, a necessity in monitoring people’s health.

Western Cape:

  • Upgraded the sports facilities at Ukhanyo Primary School, 1500 children to enjoy more exercise and sport.
  • Vegetable gardens created for children at Jonas Safe House so they receive a well-balanced meal.
  • Jungle gym put in at Jonas safe house, providing the children with a safe play area.
  • Transport the children at Jonas Safe House so they can go on a fun and exciting educational holiday camp.

Achievements in Kenya:

  • Through training and development for Mukeu special school there is now many more skills programs offered, increasing the opportunities available to the children.
  • Renovated a kitchen at Mukeu School creating a safe and healthy environment to cook the food.
  • Involved 40 mentally handicapped children in the initiation of the school farming project, both for skills training and to enable them to produce their own food.
  • Computers donated to the HIV support group.
  • Facilitated a beading workshop and purchased beads and materials for bags and tablemats to encourage income generation.
  • Built a cow shed and purchased a cow that has been producing more than 30ltrs of milk daily for consumption and sale, increasing the income to the school.
  • Paid $12,000 deposit for land at Body of Christ Children Centre – this is working towards the long term goal of them buying their own plot and building a new center.
  • Facilitated $100,000 towards constructing a pediatric ward at Kikuyu Hospital, to help local children get better health care.
  • New books for the Body of Chis’s Children’s Hometo assist with the childrens reading.

Achievements in Mozambique:

  • The education of 80 children supported through sponsor a child and the school sponsorship program.
  • First yield of vegetables produced through the sponsored farm providing 80% of the food required by the school.
  • Chicken project introduced for income generation, increasing the sustainability of the school.
  • Provided a new gate for the school, ensuring security for the children and staff.
  • School uniforms and equipment provided to the children of School of Good Hope making sure they have the tools they need and feel proud on their way to school.
  • A new scale to help monitor weight gain in the children’s nutrition program, enabling us to keep an eye on the progress made and catch any weight loss.
  • Provided e-pap for 80 children a month to help combat the high levels of child malnutrition.

Achievements in Zambia:

      • Distributed of 22,000 books with Books for Africa to schools and children’s projects around Livingstone.
      • Completion of Tabo Hall providing two classrooms, a health guidance office and a computer laboratory for the local community
      • Two additional classrooms for Mwandi School to assist them get government support.
      • 21 lab coats donated to health workers in Livinsgstone
      • Sponsored the education of 70 children to help give them a chance to complete their education.
      • Provided 50 Bicycles (donated by Bikes for Africa) for the sponsor a child program to help children living far away from school attend school more regularly.
      • Donated 10 brand new mattresses to Maramba Old People’s Home to provide the residents with better living conditions.
      • Supplied for Marumba clinic with a security gate and fence, to help combat vandalism and security issues.
      • Presented Holy Cross Soccer team with new football Boots, giving them a little boost!

 

2011 Achievements:

Achievements in South Africa:

St. Lucia:

      • Providing the children of Inkanzezi crèche safe and secure play area
      • Enhancing play through the provision of two jungle gyms
      • Supplying medical support to over 80 families
      • Development opportunities given to 10 at risk families
      • Empowerment of communities through support groups.

Thanda:

      • Initiation of community projects
      • Fencing at Mdlethshe School for safety and security of children
      • Construction of a grade three class room, reducing the amount of children per class
      • Equipping of a school library with 600 books for children to practice English
      • Engaging in conservation education with 250 children to help the learn about and appreciate their natural environment.

Cape Town:

      • Development of food security initiatives at 2 preschools, feeding 80 children
      • Holistic development of teaching skills at partner schools, better equipping the teachers.
      • Enhancement of educational environment

Achievements in Zimbabwe:

      • Supplied fresh water to over 500 children through a bore whole  at Mokba 4 Primary School
      • On-going development of Mickey Mouse preschool, serving 110 local children.

Achievements in Kenya:

      • Enhancement and enrichment of Hope School through provision of supplies and the up grading of the environment.
      • Equipping families with the knowledge and means to initiate and develop small business.

Achievements in Mozambique:

      • Providing all the children at  A Escolinha de Boa Esperanca two nutritional meals a day, in order to combat the rife malnutrition in the area.
      • Up grading of the school building to provide the children with a safe learning environment.
      • Assistance given to families to make sure their child’s birth is registered.

Achievements in Zambia:

      • Raised the funding to ship 23,000 books from the USA to Livingstone for all the local high school
      • Completion of Nakatindi Health and Education Centre, which provides a hub for the local community and income generation for the school
      • Provision of shelving for improved filing system at a local clinic so patience’s notes can be easily accessed.
      • Enhanced learning environment for 30 classrooms in Mulwani School
      • Enabled 30 children to return to school with full sponsorship – giving an amazing opportunity for children to get a better education
