It’s the small things that can make a huge difference to someone’s life and although to most people a bed would seem an obvious thing to purchase for their house or crèche, in some cases this just isn’t possible. That’s when The Happy Africa Foundation can help!
As a charity we work hard to enrich the lives of people in the communities across Africa, including those in the surrounding area of St Lucia, KwaZulu Natal. There, along with the massive help of the volunteers, we are able to purchase resources, make and deliver beds for those who are most in need.
The Happy Africa Foundation is able to buy wood from the local sawmill, which is brought to the African Impact volunteer house and made into beds by African Impact volunteers. A ‘How To’ is followed to make building easy, and just recently four amazing beds have been delivered to three crèches and one of our Medical and Home Based Care patients.
St Lucia’s Happy Africa intern, Stacey, was lucky enough to deliver a bed in person to Veronic, who is on our Medical and Home Based Care Programme. When the bed was delivered, Veronic was still in the hospital in Durban which meant Stacey and the volunteers were able to make the bed up and get it ready for her arrival.
Considering Veronic is currently suffering with cancer, it was shocking to see she had been sleeping on a small foam sheet. Along with the bed, we delivered a new foam mattress which will hopefully ensure that Veronic is more comfortable in her own home.
The other three beds were delivered to our crèches to be used for the children and babies during nap time so that they have somewhere safe and comfortable to rest. Each bed is made carefully by volunteers and it’s extremely rewarding when you get to see the final result being put to good use.
